The human mind and human eye are, to state the obvious, incredibly complex devices. That the two are linked is also obvious as vertebrate eyes grow outward from brain cells during embryonic development.

And if indeed the eye primarliy percieves colour then it is fair to say that colour is ultimately more important than shape. To be philosophical I am trying to say that colour is an a priori trigger on the human mind. A mind that is in essence is serviced by an extension of its own self, its humouress floating little eyeball.

As a student I was obssesed by semantics and networks of meaning, as well as morbid poetry, and as such I am now growing fascinated by the mind/eye relationship and perceptions of colour and the strong effect it has on us.
Obviously evolution has created a complex network that attributes bright colours to danger and toxicity and earth colours to safety. Logic dictates why this is so but what is not logical anymore is our own huge susceptibility to these things. Is this simply another vestige of our own bestial nature that is masked, cleverly, by a network of assumed signifier/sign relationships?

But why does colour strike us so? Is it simply the underlying essence of reality, which all, even the retarded, are capable of grasping.

More to follow...
